Sully (2016)

Sully is special because it turns a headline you already know into a quietly gripping meditation on competence under pressure, where heroism looks less like swagger and more like calm, practiced judgment. Clint Eastwood directs with lean restraint, letting the tension build in the cockpit, the water landing, and the aftermath without ever resorting to melodrama, while Tom Hanks gives one of his best “ordinary man carrying an extraordinary weight” performances. The film’s vibe is procedural and human at once: you feel the ticking-clock urgency, then the unsettling second act where scrutiny and second-guessing become their own kind of turbulence. If you want nonstop action this may feel measured, but if you’re drawn to true stories about professionalism, humility, and how a single decision can ripple through a life, it’s absolutely worth your time.

Sully is trying to turn a well-known real-life miracle into a grounded character study about pressure, second-guessing, and what “hero” actually costs someone afterward. The problem is that once you know everyone survives, the investigation-heavy back half can feel like manufactured tension, with a conflict that’s more procedural than pulse-pounding. Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart bring calm credibility, and Eastwood keeps it lean, but don’t come expecting nonstop disaster thrills or big emotional twists. If you like restrained, competence-driven drama and don’t mind a story that’s essentially about being proven right, it’ll work; if you want edge-of-your-seat urgency, you may find it oddly muted.
