Curve (2015)

Curve is a lean, nasty little survival thriller that wrings maximum tension out of a simple setup, then tightens the screws until you’re holding your breath along with its heroine. Iain Softley directs with a crisp sense of geography and escalation, turning an everyday roadside mishap into a claustrophobic nightmare where every choice feels costly and every second matters. Julianne Hough gives the film its pulse, selling fear and grit in a performance that keeps the suspense grounded even as the situation grows more brutal. It’s not for the squeamish—there’s harsh violence, ugly menace, and some disturbing sexual language—but if you want a straightforward, relentlessly gripping ride that doesn’t waste time, this one delivers.

Curve is clearly aiming for a tight, survival-thriller pressure cooker: one bad decision, one dangerous stranger, and a situation that keeps getting worse with no easy outs. The problem is that the movie’s big hook doesn’t develop into anything especially clever, so a lot of the tension comes from grim endurance and familiar beats rather than surprising turns or sharp character work. It’s also heavy on nasty sexual threats and bleak violence, which can feel more punishing than suspenseful if you’re not in the mood for that kind of ride. If you like contained thrillers with a committed lead performance and straightforward, mean-spirited momentum, it can scratch the itch—but if you want originality or psychological depth, this one may leave you cold.
