Son of God stands out by treating a familiar story with earnest, big-screen conviction, aiming less for novelty than for emotional immediacy and reverence. Christopher Spencer frames the Roman-occupied Holy Land with a somber, pressured atmosphere, letting the political tension and spiritual yearning sit side by side, while Diogo Morgado’s Jesus carries a calm intensity that makes the message of love and hope feel bracingly direct. The film’s power comes from its straightforward sincerity—miracles, teachings, and human reactions are played not as spectacle but as moments meant to land in the heart. It isn’t subtle, and the PG-13 crucifixion imagery is undeniably harsh, but if you’re open to a respectful, performance-driven retelling that wants to move you more than debate you, it’s an absorbing watch.

Son of God is clearly trying to offer a straightforward, reverent retelling of Jesus’ life meant to inspire faith and comfort, and it does have an earnest tone with a committed central performance. The problem is it often plays like a stitched-together highlight reel rather than a movie with momentum, so scenes arrive, deliver the message, and move on without much cinematic spark or emotional build. It can feel heavy-handed and a bit impersonal, with TV-movie texture that makes big moments look smaller than they should. If you want a polished, dramatically gripping biblical epic, this may disappoint, but if you’re mainly after a gentle, accessible sermon-like recap (with a notably intense, bloody Crucifixion), it will likely do the job.
