Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)

Insidious: Chapter 3 earns its scares the old-fashioned way: by building a thick, uneasy atmosphere and then puncturing it with jolts that feel cruelly well-timed. Leigh Whannell directs with a storyteller’s confidence, giving the film a surprising emotional undercurrent as grief and guilt seep into the shadows, and Lin Shaye’s Elise Rainier anchors it all with warmth, weariness, and steel. The Further is rendered with a nasty, imaginative edge—creepy images that linger, not just loud noises that vanish—while the family drama keeps the terror grounded in something human. If you prefer slow-burn, subtle horror, the jump-scare rhythm may be a bit aggressive, but for anyone who wants a PG-13 fright ride with real mood and a standout lead, this one delivers.

Insidious: Chapter 3 is clearly trying to expand the mythology of “The Further” while giving Elise Rainier a more personal, origin-style chapter, and on paper that’s a solid idea. The problem is it often plays like a watered-down prequel: the scares lean heavily on predictable jump-scare rhythms, the pacing drags, and the atmosphere rarely builds into real dread. It also has a cheaper, more confined feel than the earlier films, which makes the big supernatural moments land with less punch, especially in the final stretch. If you’re mainly here for Lin Shaye’s presence and a few creepy set pieces, you’ll get something out of it, but if you want the sharp tension and escalating terror of the better Insidious entries, this one may feel like a time sink.
