Room (2015)

Room is one of those rare films that takes an unbearable premise and, without softening it, finds something luminous inside it: the fierce, everyday heroism of love. Lenny Abrahamson directs with a steady hand and a compassionate eye, letting the tension play like a thriller while the heart of the story stays rooted in the bond between Brie Larson’s raw, fearless performance and Jacob Tremblay’s astonishingly natural, world-defining innocence. It’s harrowing, yes, but never exploitative—more interested in what survival looks like minute to minute, and how freedom can feel as disorienting as captivity. Not everyone will be able to sit with its subject matter, but if you can, it’s a deeply human, ultimately rewarding experience that lingers long after the credits.

Room is trying to do something admirable: tell a survival-and-recovery story through a child’s eyes, focusing less on sensationalism and more on the bond between a mother and son. It’s also an emotionally heavy sit, with an inherently disturbing premise involving captivity and sexual violence (mostly handled indirectly, but the weight is always there), so if you’re sensitive to that material, this will feel punishing rather than cathartic. While the performances—especially Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay—are the clear reason to watch, some viewers may find the plotting a bit engineered and the psychological beats occasionally too neat for what the story implies. If you want a tidy thriller with clean payoffs, this isn’t it; if you can handle grim subject matter for a human, actor-driven drama, it’s powerful even when it strains credibility.
