Trainwreck (2015)

Trainwreck feels special because it takes the well-worn romantic-comedy track and jolts it back to life with Amy Schumer’s brash, sharply observed humor and a surprisingly tender heart beating underneath. Judd Apatow lets the laughs land big and messy, but he also gives the characters room to be human, so the story’s warmth sneaks up on you in the best way—helped enormously by the offbeat, genuinely sweet chemistry between Schumer and Bill Hader. The vibe is raunchy, fast-talking, and proudly unpolished, yet it keeps circling back to something honest about fear, intimacy, and growing up. It’s definitely not for anyone allergic to explicit sex talk and heavy partying, but if you want a rom-com with bite, soul, and a killer supporting bench, this one delivers.

The problem is it’s a long movie with an episodic, stop-start feel, so the funniest, sharpest early stretches can drift into padding and side bits that don’t always pay off. It also softens into a more conventional rom-com shape just when you might want it to stay messier and more biting, which can make the emotional turns feel a little pre-packaged. If you don’t enjoy very explicit sexual humor, heavy drinking, and a protagonist who’s intentionally abrasive for a good chunk of the runtime, this will likely feel more exhausting than endearing—even if the supporting cast and a few set pieces are undeniably fun.
