Belle and Sebastian (2013)
Belle and Sebastian is set high in the snowy Alps during the Second World War. The resourceful Sebastian is a lonely boy who tames and befriends a giant, wild mountain dog, Belle – even though the villagers believe her to be ‘the beast’ that has been killing their sheep.
What people think about Belle and Sebastian
Belle and Sebastian is the kind of old-fashioned adventure that feels increasingly rare: a simple story told with such warmth and conviction that it sneaks up and wins your heart. Set against breathtaking Alpine snowscapes during WWII, it pairs the grandeur of the mountains with an intimate, deeply sincere bond between a lonely boy and the “monster” everyone else is afraid to understand. Nicolas Vanier gives the film an authentic, family-oriented glow—more humane than grim—while still letting the era’s danger flicker at the edges in a few tense moments. If you’re looking for a cynical wartime thriller, this isn’t it, but if you want a charming, visually gorgeous tale about courage, trust, and finding home, it’s a lovely bet.
Belle and Sebastian is clearly aiming for a wholesome, old-fashioned wartime adventure about a lonely kid and a misunderstood dog, wrapped in sweeping Alpine scenery and big-hearted sentiment. The problem is it often plays like a greatest-hits compilation of family-film beats, with coincidences and implausible turns that can make the danger feel manufactured rather than earned. If you’re allergic to clichés, or you want a WWII story with real edge and complexity, this may come off as too gentle and neatly packaged. Still, the central bond is sincere, the violence stays mostly mild, and the mountain landscapes do a lot of heavy lifting if you’re in the mood for comfort-viewing rather than surprises.
