Warfare earns its title the hard way: it drops you into combat with such immediacy that you don’t just watch the mission, you feel its rhythm—breath, panic, discipline, and the thin threads of trust that hold a unit together. The filmmaking is superbly tactile, especially the sound design, which turns distant pops and sudden thunderclaps into a kind of sensory storytelling that keeps you locked in without cheap thrills. What makes it stand out is its refusal to romanticize the violence; it’s unflinching about fear, confusion, and cost, yet still finds a grim humanity in brotherhood under pressure. Fair warning: this is intense and not remotely comforting, but if you want a war film that respects the truth of the experience and the audience’s intelligence, it’s absolutely worth the plunge.

Warfare is clearly aiming for boots-on-the-ground authenticity, dropping you into the confusion and brotherhood of a Ramadi mission as remembered by the men who lived it. The problem is it’s more a visceral recreation than a shaped story, so if you need clear arcs, deeper character work, or a strong emotional throughline, it can feel narratively thin and oddly distant. Its realism and tension are the main draw, but the unconventional approach may leave you wondering what it’s trying to say beyond “this is what it was like.” If you want a traditional war movie with catharsis and big dramatic beats, this probably isn’t your night; if you can handle something harsher and more observational, it may still land.
