Directors Felix Chong and Alan Mak turn phone surveillance into pure cinematic tension, letting whispered conversations and half-heard truths tighten the noose scene by scene, while Louis Koo, Sean Lau, and Daniel Wu bring a crackling mix of menace, wounded pride, and uneasy charm. Beneath the cat-and-mouse mechanics, it has a surprisingly sharp bite about power and property, giving the story a real-world sting without ever turning into a lecture. If you’re not into dense corporate-family intrigue and morally compromised characters, it may feel cold, but if you like your crime thrillers smart, stylish, and constantly shifting the ground under your feet, this one delivers.

Overheard 3 is clearly aiming for a slick, ripped-from-the-headlines Hong Kong crime thriller about land politics, loyalty, and the ugly power games behind “development,” and the setup has real bite. The problem is it stuffs in so many factions, deals, and shifting relationships that the story often stops to explain itself, draining momentum right when a thriller should be tightening the screws. If you need clean motivations and a simple through-line, the middle stretch can feel like homework with wiretaps, and the payoff may land softer than the premise promises. Still, the cast sells the moral greyness well, and if you’re patient with dense plotting and like corporate/rural power struggles more than action, there’s enough intrigue to keep you watching.
