Cymbeline (2014)
War erupts between dirty cops and outlaw bikers as a drug kingpin tries to protect his empire.
What people think about Cymbeline
Cymbeline is the kind of audacious swing that reminds you why movies are worth taking chances on: Shakespeare’s late, knotty melodrama dropped into a world of outlaw bikers, corrupt cops, and neon-lit menace, filmed with Michael Almereyda’s moody, street-poetry style. It’s atmospheric and strangely beautiful, letting Ed Harris and a game cast deliver heightened language amid guns, leather, and bruised loyalty, until the clash of tones starts to feel like the point rather than a problem. The film’s real pleasure is how it leans into the story’s wild turns without apology, finding surprising emotional depth inside the pulp and pageantry. If you need your crime dramas strictly realistic or your Shakespeare strictly classical, this may feel eccentric—but if you’re open to something inventive and fearless, it’s a one-of-a-kind ride.
Cymbeline is clearly trying to be a bold mash-up: Shakespeare’s tangled romantic tragedy dropped into a modern biker-and-dirty-cops crime war, with a pulpy, operatic tone. The problem is that the concept doesn’t consistently click, so the story can feel muddled and oddly underpowered—like it’s speaking in two languages at once, neither of them landing with much dramatic punch. If you don’t enjoy stylized, “what am I watching?” adaptations where coherence takes a back seat to vibe and ambition, this will likely test your patience. That said, the cast brings commitment and there are flashes of moody atmosphere, so it may work for viewers who like messy experiments more than clean storytelling.
