Spy (2015)

Spy is that rare action-comedy that doesn’t just spoof the genre—it delivers a genuinely satisfying spy movie while laughing at the absurdity of it all, and it’s powered by Melissa McCarthy in peak, command-the-room form. Paul Feig keeps the pace snappy and the set pieces surprisingly punchy, letting the comedy land without deflating the stakes, while Rose Byrne purrs venom with impeccable timing and Jason Statham gleefully sends up his own tough-guy image. The vibe is slick-but-silly, with big laughs coming from character clashes and escalating chaos rather than winking cynicism. It is very R-rated—profane, occasionally brutal, and with a brief nudity gag—so it won’t be everyone’s comfort watch, but if you want a crowd-pleaser that’s both funny and legitimately exciting, it’s a terrific bet.

Spy is trying to be a glossy Bond-style thriller that also takes the mickey out of spy-movie ego, with Melissa McCarthy as the unlikely underdog who proves she belongs in the field. When it works, it’s because McCarthy, Rose Byrne, and especially Jason Statham commit hard to the joke, and the action is competent enough to keep things moving. The downside is it’s longer than it needs to be, and a lot of the comedy leans on broad, sometimes crude gags and familiar beats that can feel like you’ve seen the setup before. If you want a tight, clever satire or a genuinely suspenseful spy film, this may feel a bit bloated and obvious—but if you’re happy with an R-rated, star-driven comedy that coasts on chemistry and silliness, it’ll do the job.
