Love & Friendship (2016)

Love & Friendship is the rare period comedy that feels both impeccably mannered and deliciously wicked, a Jane Austen adaptation that trades swoony candlelight for razor-edged charm. Whit Stillman directs with a light, confident touch, letting the film’s sparkling dialogue do the heavy lifting as social niceties become weapons and every polite smile hides a calculation. Kate Beckinsale is a revelation as Lady Susan—glamorous, quicksilver, and unapologetically self-interested—commanding the screen with the kind of comic precision that makes you laugh even when you’re not sure you should. If you want sweeping romance, this may feel too sly and talky, but if you enjoy intelligence, mischief, and an ensemble firing on all cylinders, it’s an absolute treat.

Love & Friendship is trying to be a razor-sharp Austen social comedy, where the real action is in the manners, the manipulation, and the perfectly timed put-downs rather than big romantic swoons. When it works, it’s deliciously witty, and Kate Beckinsale is terrific at making Lady Susan charming and alarming in the same breath. But if you need warmth, earnest romance, or a clear moral center to latch onto, this can feel chilly, talky, and more like watching a brilliant person misbehave than rooting for anyone’s happiness. It’s ideal for viewers who enjoy literary dialogue and satire; less so if you’re expecting a cozy period love story with heartfelt payoffs.
