Last Shift (2014)

Last Shift turns a simple premise—a lone rookie guarding an empty, soon-to-be-abandoned police station—into a pressure-cooker of dread that tightens with every locked door and flickering light. Director Anthony DiBlasi milks the claustrophobic setting for all it’s worth, building suspense with patient, nerve-prickling atmosphere and unsettling imagery that feels grimy, immediate, and inescapable. Juliana Harkavy carries the film with a believable mix of grit and vulnerability, making the scares land not just as shocks, but as a test of will. It’s a lean, mean haunted-house ride dressed in a badge and duty belt—though if you prefer your horror more subtle than bloody and intense, this one may be a little too relentless to call “fun.”

Last Shift is aiming for a lean, single-location descent into panic, using a rookie cop’s night alone in an empty station as a pressure cooker for cult dread and supernatural chaos. When it’s working, it’s nasty in a good way: tight pacing, a committed lead performance, and a few genuinely unsettling images that don’t rely on expensive spectacle. But it also leans hard on familiar haunted-building beats and “did that really happen?” confusion, and it’s not especially interested in answering its own questions so much as piling on escalating shocks. If you want clean mythology and logical rules, you’ll likely leave annoyed; if you’re happy to ride a grimy, loud, jump-scare-heavy nightmare for 90 minutes, it’ll do the job.
