Visions (2015)

Visions is the kind of glossy, slow-burn thriller that sneaks up on you: it looks like a familiar haunted-house story set among sunlit rows of wine grapes, then steadily tightens into something sharper, sadder, and more personal. Kevin Greutert leans into atmosphere—warm California beauty contrasted with creeping dread—and gives Isla Fisher room to play a woman whose terror is doubled by the most chilling fear of all: that no one believes her. It’s not reinventing the genre, and if you’re allergic to supernatural-thriller conventions you’ll feel the gears turning, but the movie earns your patience with an escalating sense of unease and a final stretch that delivers a bracing payoff. Come for the mystery and mood, stay for the way it turns paranoia and pregnancy into a pressure cooker you can’t quite look away from.

Visions is clearly aiming for a glossy, slow-burn “is it supernatural or psychological?” thriller, using pregnancy and trauma as the pressure cooker. The problem is it takes a long time to get moving, and the characters often feel like they’re being pushed through plot beats rather than making choices you can really believe, which makes the mystery less gripping than it wants to be. A lot of the early tension leans on familiar haunted-house tricks and red herrings that don’t land cleanly, so if you need tight pacing or smart, layered character work, this will test your patience. Still, Isla Fisher commits, the vineyard setting looks good, and the film does deliver a nastier, more violent payoff than you might expect if you can stick with the sluggish build.
