Mirabel, the one “ordinary” Madrigal, makes for a compelling guide through a world of gifts and pressure, and the story finds grace in places you don’t expect. If you’re allergic to musicals or prefer your fantasy without big feelings, it may not be your spell—but for most viewers, it’s an enchanting modern classic that earns its tears and its laughter.

Encanto is clearly aiming for a heartfelt, culture-rich Disney musical about family pressure, identity, and what “special” really means, wrapped in bright Colombian-inspired visuals and a lively magical-house premise. The problem is the storytelling can feel a bit scattered—like it’s sprinting from one emotional beat to the next without letting the themes fully land—so if you want a tight, deeply satisfying narrative, this might leave you shrugging.
