The Pool (2014)

The Pool is the kind of horror film that earns your attention through patience and craft, building dread not with cheap jolts but with an intelligent, steadily tightening grip. Chris W. Mitchell turns a tranquil, off-the-grid campsite and its inviting water into something quietly wrong, using long, unbroken takes and a hushed, naturalistic vibe that makes the unease feel like it’s seeping into the trees. The performances—especially Carine Crutzen and Gijs Scholten van Aschat—keep the fear grounded in believable family tensions, so when things begin to rot and unravel, it lands with real weight. It isn’t for viewers who want constant shocks or blood-soaked spectacle, but if you like atmospheric horror with strong acting and a payoff that feels earned, this one is absolutely worth the trip into the woods.

The Pool is aiming for a slow-burn, nature-isn’t-your-friend horror where a peaceful illegal camping trip curdles into claustrophobic dread and psychological unraveling. It does build an eerie mood early on, with the pond’s “something’s wrong here” vibe and a few unsettling images doing the heavy lifting. But once the story needs to pay off, it can feel predictable and oddly nonsensical, with tension leaking out rather than tightening and performances that don’t always sell the madness. If you want tight plotting, escalating suspense, and satisfying logic, you’ll likely be frustrated; if you’re okay with a moody setup, some decay-and-dread atmosphere, and a few gnarly moments, you might still find it passable.
