Soul (2020)
Joe Gardner is a middle school teacher with a love for jazz music. After a successful audition at the Half Note Club, he suddenly gets into an accident that separates his soul from his body and is transported to the You Seminar, a center in which souls develop and gain passions before being transported to a newborn child. Joe must enlist help from the other souls-in-training, like 22, a soul who has spent eons in the You Seminar, in order to get back to Earth.
What people think about Soul
Soul is Pixar firing on all cylinders—an animated film that swings like a great jazz set, playful and improvisational on the surface, yet quietly building toward something profound. Pete Docter turns a fantastical premise into a visually dazzling, music-soaked journey that’s as funny and buoyant as it is heartfelt, with Jamie Foxx’s warmth and Tina Fey’s brisk wit sparking off each other in just the right rhythm. The movie doesn’t lecture; it invites you to look at everyday life with fresh eyes, finding wonder in small moments as much as big dreams. If you’re only in the mood for a simple, kid-first adventure, this one’s more reflective than that—but if you want an ambitious, soul-stirring crowd-pleaser that lingers after the credits, it’s absolutely worth your time.
Soul is clearly aiming for a big, philosophical Pixar swing—using jazz, humor, and a high-concept afterlife setup to nudge you toward appreciating ordinary life. When it works, the animation is gorgeous, the music has real lift, and the central pairing has enough charm to keep you moving. But if you want a tightly focused story with a deeply earned emotional gut-punch, you may find the message a bit tidy, the plot occasionally scattered, and the main character’s shift more “planned” than truly felt. Worth your time if you’re in the mood for a thoughtful, idea-driven ride; maybe not if you prefer Pixar at its most cleanly structured and devastating.
