Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)

Everybody Wants Some!! is one of those rare comedies that doesn’t just chase laughs—it bottles a fleeting moment in life and lets you live inside it, warm and loud and a little reckless. Richard Linklater turns a few days with a college baseball team into a hangout symphony of sharp dialogue, easy charisma, and a soundtrack that practically sweats 1980, finding surprising tenderness beneath the bravado. The movie’s joy comes from watching these guys posture, bond, and stumble toward adulthood, with performances that make even the most familiar “jock” types feel human and specific. It’s loose, episodic, and proudly more about vibe than plot, so if you need a big story engine it may feel like it’s just cruising—but if you’re on its wavelength, it’s funny, affectionate, and sneakily profound about how fast “right now” becomes memory.

Everybody Wants Some!! is Richard Linklater doing what he does best: capturing a specific time and vibe, letting you hang out with a group of guys as they stumble through the last gasp of freedom before real adulthood kicks in. If you need a tight plot, big comedic set pieces, or meaningful consequences, this will feel meandering and a bit self-satisfied—more a string of parties and macho bonding than a story that goes anywhere. It also tends to romanticize the era’s locker-room culture, with women kept on the sidelines and the uglier edges (misogyny, homophobia) not really confronted, which can make the whole thing feel dated in the wrong way. On the plus side, the cast has easy charm, the dialogue is lively, and if you’re happy to just soak in a laid-back hangout movie with music, jokes, and nostalgia, it can be a pleasant ride.
