God's Pocket (2014)

God’s Pocket is special because it turns a grim little corner of Philadelphia into a lived-in world you can practically smell—beer, sweat, bad decisions—and then lets its characters stumble through it with a dark, rueful humor that feels earned rather than cute. Philip Seymour Hoffman gives one of those performances that’s all bruised dignity and cornered-animal panic, while Christina Hendricks and Richard Jenkins add real ache and sharp edges to what could’ve been stock noir types. John Slattery directs with a steady hand, finding a pulpy, tabloid energy without losing sight of the sadness underneath, so the movie plays like a working-class tragedy that keeps accidentally making you laugh. It’s not for everyone—bleak, profane, and often messy on purpose—but if you like character-driven dramas where every glance suggests a whole history, this one sticks with you.
