Amy is special because it doesn’t “cover” Amy Winehouse so much as let you sit beside her, built from raw home videos, candid voicemails, and the kind of archival moments that feel almost too intimate to be real. Asif Kapadia shapes the footage with a storyteller’s precision, turning a familiar headline tragedy into a gripping, human-scale portrait of a once-in-a-generation talent colliding with fame’s machinery. The vibe is soulful and electric when the music takes over, then quietly devastating as the walls close in—not sensationalized, just unflinchingly honest about the costs of addiction and celebrity. It’s not an easy watch and the language and drug material are front and center, but if you care about music, empathy, or how a culture can both idolize and consume someone, this documentary hits with the force of a great song you can’t shake.

Amy is clearly trying to give Amy Winehouse her voice back through intimate archive footage and candid interviews, and as a piece of music history it’s powerful and often beautifully assembled. But it also leans hard into the collapse, and the sheer amount of private, painful material can feel less like insight and more like watching someone unravel while the camera keeps rolling. If you’re sensitive to addiction, eating disorders, self-harm, or you simply don’t want a documentary that risks blurring the line between tribute and spectacle, this may leave you feeling grimy rather than enlightened. That said, the performances and studio moments are genuinely moving, and if you can handle the heaviness, it does capture just how rare her talent was.
