Tag (2018)

Tag is the rare studio comedy that takes a ridiculous premise and commits to it with the swagger of an action movie and the warmth of a friendship story, turning grown men sprinting through offices and weddings into something strangely exhilarating. The ensemble clicks in that easy, lived-in way—Ed Helms brings the anxious heart, Jon Hamm plays against type with deadpan charm, and Jeremy Renner makes the “undefeated” friend feel like a myth with a pulse—so every ambush and near-miss lands like a punchline you can feel. Director Jeff Tomsic keeps the pace snappy and the set pieces inventive, but what sneaks up on you is how sincerely the film believes in these guys and the goofy ritual that keeps them connected. It is definitely not for everyone—it's proudly R-rated with crude jokes and constant profanity—but if you’re in the mood for a high-energy crowd-pleaser that laughs hard and means it when it talks about loyalty, this game is worth joining.

Tag is clearly trying to bottle that “grown men acting like kids” energy and turn a sweet real-life friendship into a big, crowd-pleasing action-comedy. The problem is the movie often plays like a one-joke premise stretched thin: the set pieces repeat, the pacing sags between chases, and the writing doesn’t always land hard enough to justify the R-rated crudeness. If you’re expecting a nonstop laugh riot or a truly wild, commit-to-the-bit farce, you may find it oddly ordinary and a little underpowered. Still, the cast is game (Hamm and Helms in particular), and when it leans into the camaraderie, it has a surprisingly warm heartbeat that might work for you if you’re in the mood for something easy and disposable.
