Hot Bot (2016)

Hot Bot is one of those scrappy, slightly outrageous sci-fi comedies that surprises you with how much personality it squeezes out of a knowingly silly premise. It plays like a teen misfit fantasy filtered through a B-movie glow—brightly shot, frequently absurd, and punctuated by genuinely memorable bits that stick longer than you’d expect. The humor is often more original and subtly observed than the title suggests, and when Larry Miller and Cynthia Kirchner show up, the movie gets a welcome jolt of comic timing and presence. It’s not for anyone allergic to raunchy, juvenile setups, but if you’re in the mood for an underrated oddball with moments of real comedic spark, it’s an easy, fun watch.

Hot Bot is clearly aiming for a raunchy teen sci-fi comedy about awkward outsiders stumbling into a fantasy scenario and learning a few lessons along the way. The problem is it mostly plays like a string of tired sex jokes and clichés without the wit or charm to make the premise feel fresh, and the characters can come off more irritating than endearing. If you’re hoping for sharp comedy, clever sci-fi twists, or even a halfway coherent plot, this will likely feel loud, pointless, and longer than it is. The only real appeal is for viewers with a very low bar who just want crude, mindless background noise and don’t mind the execution being as cheap as the concept.
