Extraction (2013)

Extraction earns its keep the old-fashioned way: by delivering lean, relentless action with fight choreography that actually tells a story through movement, not just noise. Dropped into the claustrophobic pressure cooker of a maximum-security Chechen prison, it keeps the vibe gritty and urgent, letting Jon Foo’s martial-arts prowess do the heavy lifting as every corridor and cellblock becomes a new problem to solve with fists, timing, and nerve. There’s a pleasing, no-nonsense momentum here—more bruised knuckles than grand speeches—that makes it an easy pick when you want something entertaining and solid without a lot of downtime. If you’re looking for deep character drama you may find it spare, but if you want crisp combat and high-octane survival thrills, it hits the target.

Extraction (2013) wants to be a lean, digital-era action thriller about one man clawing his way out of a brutal prison while keeping a key asset alive, and on that basic level it delivers some competent, hard-edged scraps. The problem is the script is thin and over-fussy at the same time, padding the runtime with plot detours and “because the movie needs it” turns that don’t add much tension. A lot of the action starts to feel interchangeable, so instead of escalating, it can come off repetitive and oddly slow between bursts of violence. If you’re here purely for straightforward shootouts and can ignore a mediocre story, you might get by; if you need sharp writing or memorable set pieces, this probably isn’t worth your time.
