The Opposite Sex (2015)
The story of Vince, New England's most successful divorce attorney. To Vince, life is one big competition, and losing is unacceptable. This also applies in his dating life with his love 'em and leave 'em approach. Then Vince meets Jane, who is beautiful, successful and also extremely driven. Together they enter into a series of entertaining wagers with each other where the winner gets to decide the fate of the loser.
What people think about The Opposite Sex
The Opposite Sex is the kind of breezy, modern rom-com that wins you over with sheer momentum: two fiercely competitive adults turning romance into a sport, and the movie smartly mines that setup for genuinely witty, fast-moving fun. Geoff Stults and Mena Suvari play off each other with a playful edge, keeping the tone light and a little mischievous as the wagers escalate and egos collide. It’s fluffy in the best way—easygoing, clever enough to keep you smiling, and happy to be “harmless, enjoyable” entertainment rather than a grand statement. If you’re not into sexually frank comedy (there’s moderate sexual content and some strong language), it may not be your style, but if you want an uncomplicated, date-night laugh with a competitive spark, it’s an easy yes.
The Opposite Sex is aiming for a slick, battle-of-the-sexes rom-com where two ultra-competitive adults turn dating into a string of wagers and, inevitably, feelings. The problem is it asks you to invest in a lead who’s written as more smug womanizer than charming rogue, so if you don’t buy him early, the whole movie becomes an endurance test. The humor leans old-school and a bit creaky, and the central relationship can feel more like sparring on paper than genuine chemistry on screen. If you’re in the mood for a light, mildly raunchy comedy and can tolerate an abrasive protagonist, you might find a few watchable moments, but if you want modern rom-com warmth or likable leads, this probably isn’t your night.
