Big Men (2014)

Big Men is special because it gets you inside rooms you’re rarely allowed to enter, turning the opaque machinery of oil, power, and politics into something you can actually see and feel. Rachel Boynton films with the calm confidence of someone who knows the most damning revelations don’t need narration—they emerge from candid conversations, uneasy alliances, and the small human tells of ambition under pressure. The vibe is tense, observant, and morally complicated, refusing easy villains while still illuminating how global capitalism can warp lives from boardrooms to the Niger Delta. It’s not a breezy watch and it won’t satisfy anyone looking for simple answers, but if you want a documentary that’s both gripping and genuinely illuminating, this one lingers in the mind.

Big Men is clearly trying to be a serious, access-driven look at how oil money, politics, and corporate ambition collide in Ghana and the Niger Delta, and it succeeds in feeling informed and responsibly reported. The trade-off is that it can play fairly dry: lots of meetings, negotiations, and procedural detail, with less of a character-driven emotional hook than some viewers expect from a “gripping” documentary. If you need a fast pace, heavy narration, or constant dramatic turns, this may feel more like homework than a thriller. But if you’re patient and interested in how power actually works behind closed doors, it’s a sobering, worthwhile watch.
