Rigor Mortis (2013)

Rigor Mortis is the rare horror film that feels like a haunted elegy: steeped in Hong Kong folklore, shot with a painter’s eye for shadow and decay, and carried by a veteran cast that makes every corridor and every silence feel lived-in. Juno Mak builds dread the old-fashioned way—through atmosphere you can almost breathe—then punctuates it with bursts of savage action and supernatural imagery that’s as imaginative as it is unsettling. Beneath the chills, there’s a surprisingly tender current of grief and loneliness, which gives the scares real weight instead of just shock value. It’s not for viewers who want a straightforward, cleanly plotted ride, but if you’re on the fence and crave horror with mood, myth, and melancholy soul, this one lingers.

Rigor Mortis is clearly trying to be a moody, loving throwback to classic Hong Kong jiangshi cinema, mixing haunted-apartment tragedy with operatic action and a heavy dose of style. The problem is that the storytelling can feel muddled and overstuffed, with genre nods and supernatural rules piling up faster than the film can make them emotionally or logically click. If you’re coming for clean scares or a tight, easy-to-follow horror ride, you may find it more “beautiful chaos” than frightening, with digital effects and big set pieces doing a lot of the heavy lifting. That said, the atmosphere is strong, the cast brings real gravitas, and if you enjoy dreamlike horror that plays more like a melancholic fever dream than a conventional fright film, it might still be worth your time.
