Director Kim Yong-hwa stages the mission with confident, top-tier visuals and crisp technical detail, but the real hook is the push-and-pull between an astronaut fighting isolation in the silence of the moon and the people on Earth racing time, politics, and guilt to bring him home. Sul Kyung-gu gives the film its weary conscience, Doh Kyung-soo supplies the nerve and vulnerability, and Kim Hee-ae adds a steady, smart intensity that makes the international stakes feel personal rather than procedural. It’s tense and occasionally harrowing—space is not treated as a theme park here—so if you prefer your sci-fi light and quippy, this may feel heavy, but if you want an earnest, propulsive survival drama with Gravity-like immediacy and a generous heart, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

The Moon is clearly aiming for a big, crowd-pleasing survival-in-space drama that spotlights Korea’s ambition and resilience, and on a technical level it often looks the part. The problem is the storytelling leans hard on familiar blockbuster beats, with plot turns that can feel convenient and emotions that are pushed so loudly they start to feel manufactured rather than earned. The pacing rarely gives you room to breathe, and the score can come on so strong it tells you what to feel before you’ve had a chance to. If you want a grounded, logic-first sci-fi or subtle character work, this may frustrate you—but if you’re happy with glossy spectacle, high stakes, and straightforward heroics, it can still deliver an engaging ride.
