T2 Trainspotting (2017)

T2 Trainspotting is that rare sequel that doesn’t just revisit old glories—it wrestles them to the ground and asks what they’re worth when you’re older, bruised, and still trying to laugh. Danny Boyle brings back the original film’s pop-shot energy and wicked humor, but now it’s sharpened by a surprising tenderness, letting the characters’ swagger coexist with real regret and hard-won affection. Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, and Ewen Bremner slip into these roles like time never passed, making the reunion feel less like fan service and more like a messy, human reckoning with friendship and survival. It’s loud, profane, and sometimes brutally raw, so it’s not for everyone—but if you can handle the R-rated edge, it delivers an emotionally resonant jolt that sticks long after the music fades.

T2 Trainspotting is clearly trying to do something honest: revisit these characters as middle-aged men and ask what’s left when the adrenaline, rebellion, and chemical “purpose” are gone. The problem is that it often leans on nostalgia and callbacks instead of finding a truly sharp new angle, so if you want the original’s shock, bite, and sense of danger, this can feel softer and a bit self-conscious. That said, the performances (especially Bremner) bring real pathos, and Boyle still knows how to punch a scene with style and music. If you’re not interested in a melancholic, sometimes uneven reunion tour with heavy language, drugs, and sexual content, you’ll probably leave wishing it had stayed a one-off.
