Sinister 2 (2015)

Sinister 2 earns its scares the old-fashioned way: with a creeping, rural dread that seeps into the walls, and a string of “home movie” set pieces so cruelly inventive you’ll catch yourself watching through your fingers. Ciarán Foy knows how to turn empty fields, dim hallways, and a nearby church into a pressure cooker of unease, while James Ransone’s scrappy, believable ex-deputy injects a much-needed jolt of human energy into the nightmare. The film’s vibe is nasty and relentless rather than classy-and-quiet, but when it locks into its atmosphere and visuals, it delivers the kind of grim, memorable horror that lingers after the credits. Sinister 2 is clearly trying to expand the franchise by shifting the focus to a mother-and-kids-in-danger setup and doubling down on those nasty “home movie” set pieces. The problem is it often feels like a checklist sequel: louder jump scares, familiar horror beats, and dialogue that doesn’t sell the stakes, which makes the tension flatter than the original. If you’re hoping for the slow-burn dread and creeping mystery that made the first film work, this one may feel like a retread with extra noise. That said, the murder-film sequences are still grimly inventive and James Ransone brings some likable, scrappy energy—so if you just want straightforward, mean-spirited shocks, you’ll probably get what you came for.
