Endless Night (2015)

Endless Night is special because it turns an epic Arctic expedition into something more intimate and haunting: a portrait of longing and grit set against a landscape that feels vast enough to swallow certainty whole. Isabel Coixet directs with a patient, tactile eye, letting the cold, the silence, and the hard-won moments of connection do the talking, while Juliette Binoche brings a fierce vulnerability to Josephine’s determination that’s impossible to shrug off. The film’s adventure elements are there—the peril, the endurance, the awe—but its real pull is the emotional journey and the bond that forms with Rinko Kikuchi’s Allaka, giving the story warmth where you least expect it. If you want a brisk, plot-heavy survival thriller, this may feel too meditative, but if you’re drawn to atmospheric drama that lingers like a memory, it’s absolutely worth the trek.

Endless Night wants to be a stark, feminist-leaning survival drama about obsession and endurance at the edge of the world, and on paper the Arctic setting plus Juliette Binoche sounds like a sure thing. In practice, it often feels oddly flat: the script leans on familiar beats and stereotypes, the pacing drifts, and the direction can’t quite decide whether it’s intimate character study or sweeping adventure, so the emotional stakes don’t consistently land. If you’re expecting a tense expedition thriller or a richly textured historical drama, you may find it pretty lifeless despite its prestige ingredients. Still, the icy landscapes and committed performances (especially Binoche and Rinko Kikuchi) give it moments of atmosphere—just not enough to carry the whole journey for most viewers.
