Kristian Levring frames the frontier with stark, sunbaked beauty, and then lets the tension tighten scene by scene until it’s almost unbearable—helped enormously by Mads Mikkelsen’s granite-calm intensity and Eva Green’s haunting, magnetic presence. It’s a lean, stylish revenge drama that plays like an old legend told with modern bite, honoring the genre’s iconography while keeping the emotions close to the bone. Fair warning: it’s brutally violent and unflinching, so it’s not for the squeamish, but if you want a Western that looks gorgeous, hits hard, and doesn’t waste a moment, this one earns your time.

The Salvation is clearly aiming for a lean, old-school revenge Western with European grit: a wronged man, a corrupt town, and a final reckoning. The problem is it often feels like a greatest-hits tribute rather than a story with its own pulse, with characters that can come off more like archetypes than people you’ll genuinely care about. It’s also relentlessly harsh—sexual violence is implied, and the brutality is frequent—so if you’re not in the mood for grim punishment and bleak cowardice from nearly everyone on screen, this will be a slog. Still, Mads Mikkelsen brings quiet intensity, Eva Green adds a striking, wounded presence, and if you just want a straightforward, stylish revenge ride without expecting much depth or originality, it does deliver that.
