AKA (2023)
A steely special ops agent finds his morality put to the test when he infiltrates a crime syndicate and unexpectedly bonds with the boss' young son.
What people think about AKA
AKA is the kind of sleek, hard-edged French action thriller that earns your attention through craft: the fights land with bruising clarity, the pacing stays taut, and Florent Astolfi’s moody cinematography gives every corridor and night street a lived-in menace. Alban Lenoir brings a brooding, quietly human intensity to the undercover agent at the center, and the film’s best surprise is how a simple bond with a child can add real moral weight without softening the steel. Morgan S. Dalibert stages the violence with confident precision, while Etienne Forget’s score keeps the tension humming even in the calmer moments, making the whole thing feel more like a pressure cooker than a parade of set pieces. It’s not the most original story in the genre, and it’s definitely for viewers who can handle TV-MA brutality, but if you want a polished, suspenseful action ride with a beating heart under the armor, AKA delivers.
AKA is clearly aiming for a gritty, French-style undercover thriller where a hardened operative slowly rediscovers his humanity through an unexpected bond with a child. The problem is it rarely rises above “seen it before” plotting—double-crosses, corrupt officials, and familiar moral dilemmas arrive right on schedule, so the story feels more functional than gripping. If you’re coming for fresh ideas or sharp writing, this will likely play like a competent checklist rather than a standout. That said, Alban Lenoir brings physical credibility and the action hits hard, so if you just want a tough, violent time-killer and don’t mind heavy TV-MA content, it’ll do the job.
