The Remaining (2014)

The Remaining is a lean, high-concept horror-thriller that takes a familiar wedding-day setup and detonates it into an apocalyptic nightmare with surprising urgency. Director Casey La Scala keeps the camera close to the characters and the pacing tight, so the chaos feels immediate—less grand sermon, more breathless scramble—while the effects and large-scale destruction sell the end-of-the-world vibe better than you’d expect from its budget. There’s a pulpy, midnight-movie energy to the suspense, punctuated by demonic imagery and jolts of violence that stay PG-13 but still land with a sting. It’s also unapologetically faith-forward, so if religious themes aren’t your thing you may bounce off, but if you’re open to a doomsday thriller that commits to its premise and moves like a runaway train, it’s an easy, gripping watch.

The Remaining is clearly trying to mash up a wedding-night disaster thriller with a faith-forward Rapture story, aiming for urgency, spectacle, and a moral wake-up call. The problem is it plays like a sermon stitched to a low-budget creature feature: characters are thin, dialogue is clunky, and the “shocking” turns feel telegraphed long before they land. The effects and cinematography are uneven, and if you’re hoping for smart horror tension or nuanced theology, you’ll likely find both frustratingly simplistic. Still, if you want a PG-13 apocalypse ride with explicit Christian messaging and a few gnarly set pieces, it can scratch that very specific itch.
