Submission (2018)

Submission is the kind of adult drama Hollywood makes too rarely anymore: a smart, quietly tense character study that watches a seemingly respectable life tilt off its axis one small choice at a time. Stanley Tucci gives a richly human performance—charming, self-deluding, and painfully believable—while Addison Timlin matches him with a presence that’s equal parts talent, volatility, and calculation, making every scene between them feel charged without the movie needing to shout. Director Richard Levine treats the material with a thoughtful, observant touch, letting classroom politics, ambition, and desire mingle into an atmosphere that’s both intimate and ominous. It’s not a feel-good watch and it may frustrate anyone craving clear heroes and villains, but if you like intelligent, well-acted dramas that stay with you because they feel uncomfortably plausible, this one is worth your time.

Submission is clearly trying to be a sharp, timely drama about power, desire, and the messy collision of campus politics with personal failure, and the setup has real potential. The problem is it plays things so cautiously and predictably that the supposed provocation rarely turns into insight, leaving the story to lean on familiar beats rather than digging into the moral gray areas. If you’re hoping for a biting satire or a psychologically rich character study, you may find it frustratingly restrained and a bit cliché. Still, the cast (especially Stanley Tucci) brings professionalism and a few grounded moments that make it watchable if you’re in the mood for a low-key, talky cautionary tale rather than something truly daring.
