Every Body (2023)
Three intersex individuals overcame shame, secrecy and unauthorized surgery throughout their childhoods to enjoy successful adulthoods, choosing to ignore medical advice to conceal their bodies and coming out as who they truly are.
What people think about Every Body
Every Body is special because it takes a subject most of us were never taught to understand and makes it feel immediate, human, and urgently worth knowing—without turning anyone’s life into a spectacle. Director Julie Cohen threads the candid, often funny, always courageous voices of River Gallo, Alicia Roth Weigel, and Sean Saifa Wall through a brisk history of how medical authority has shaped intersex lives, creating a documentary that’s as illuminating as it is emotionally present. The tone is compassionate and clear-eyed: it doesn’t flinch from painful truths, but it’s ultimately powered by dignity, advocacy, and the relief of people finally speaking in their own terms. It’s not an easy watch if medical trauma is a trigger, but if you’re on the fence, this is the kind of film that leaves you feeling more informed, more empathetic, and quietly changed.
Every Body is clearly trying to do something urgent and necessary: put real intersex lives front and center, expose harmful medical norms, and give its subjects the dignity of telling their own stories on their own terms. When it sticks to Sean Saifa Wall, Alicia Roth Weigel, and River Gallo’s experiences, it’s compelling, informative, and hard to dismiss. The catch is that the film’s slick, pop-forward presentation and stylistic flourishes can feel like “packaging” that occasionally distracts from the gravity of what’s being discussed, and some viewers may find that polish borderline distasteful given the subject matter. If you want a more restrained, purely observational documentary style, this might irritate you—but if you can tolerate a persuasive, highly produced approach, the insight and advocacy are the real value here.
