The Boss (2016)

What makes The Boss worth your time is the way it lets Melissa McCarthy go big, brash, and wonderfully unfiltered, then quietly pivots to something warmer without losing its bite. It’s a raunchy, crowd-pleasing comedy about a fallen mogul clawing her way back from humiliation, packed with sharp one-liners, delightfully petty rivalries, and a surprisingly sweet found-family energy thanks to Kristen Bell’s grounded charm. Ben Falcone keeps the vibe loose and goofy, and when the movie leans into its “fantastically bonkers” impulses—especially with Peter Dinklage in the mix—it lands some genuinely memorable laughs. It’s not for everyone if you’re allergic to broad, R-rated silliness, but if you want a comedy that’s shameless, game, and occasionally heartfelt, this one delivers.

The Boss wants to be a big, brash redemption comedy about a fallen corporate bully clawing her way back to the top, with Melissa McCarthy doing her usual larger-than-life steamrolling. The problem is the script feels thin and oddly sluggish, so a lot of the jokes land like first drafts—loud, crude, and predictable without the rhythm to keep the momentum going. There are a few bright spots, mainly Kristen Bell’s likability and occasional flashes of McCarthy’s physical comedy, but they’re not enough to disguise how scattershot the gags are. If you’re not already sold on McCarthy-style R-rated riffing and don’t enjoy comedies that coast on attitude more than cleverness, this one will probably feel like a waste of your time.
