Young Ones (2014)

Young Ones feels like a western that rode straight into tomorrow: a dusty, sun-blasted frontier where water is currency, machines are beasts of burden, and every moral choice leaves tracks in the sand. Jake Paltrow’s gift is atmosphere—he builds a lived-in dystopia with tactile visuals and quiet, confident world-building, then lets the tension seep in through long looks, hard silences, and the constant pressure of scarcity. Michael Shannon brings a weathered gravity, while Nicholas Hoult and Elle Fanning give the story a simmering, youthful volatility that makes the drama feel personal even when the setting is starkly futuristic. It’s not a crowd-pleasing, quip-heavy sci-fi ride—this is a slow-burn, R-rated tale of land, family, and survival—but if you like genre films that take big swings and linger in your mind like heat haze, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

Young Ones is clearly aiming for a gritty, near-future western about water scarcity, family legacy, and what desperation does to people, and on paper that’s a strong hook. The problem is it often feels like a beautifully designed world in search of a fully satisfying story, with characters who can come off more like sketches than people you’ll genuinely connect with. If you want a tense, emotionally involving revenge drama with rich relationships and big payoffs, this may leave you staring at the screen thinking, “Is that it?” Still, Michael Shannon brings real weight, the dusty sci-fi western vibe is distinctive, and if you’re into slow-burn mood pieces where atmosphere matters more than drama, you might be fine with its restraint.
