Jilla (2014)

Jilla is the kind of big, crowd-pleasing action film that understands its own mythic appeal: a larger-than-life crime lord and the son he raised, bound by loyalty until duty and conscience start pulling them apart. Mohanlal brings a commanding, almost regal menace to Siva, while Vijay gives Sakthi the swagger of a mass hero with just enough emotional weight to make the conflict sting, and their scenes together crackle with star power. The movie moves with punchy momentum—hard-hitting fights, a thumping background score, and that festival-release energy where every turn is designed to get the audience cheering. It is undeniably violent and proudly melodramatic, so if you want subtle realism this won’t be it, but if you’re on the fence and craving stylish, high-octane entertainment with a strong father-son showdown at its core, Jilla delivers.

Jilla is clearly aiming for a big, crowd-pleasing masala showdown: a loyal adopted son torn between a feared godfather and the badge, with Vijay’s swagger and Mohanlal’s gravitas doing most of the heavy lifting. The problem is it’s stuffed to the brim with familiar commercial beats—extended runtime, detours into songs and side moments, and a very predictable writing track that blunts what could’ve been a sharper emotional conflict. The action is plentiful and often brutal, but the pacing can feel like it’s constantly stopping to remind you you’re watching a “star vehicle” rather than a tight story. If you love larger-than-life hero moments and don’t mind formula and length, you’ll get your money’s worth; if you want lean storytelling or surprises, this is likely to test your patience.
