Me Before You (2016)
Lou Clark, a directionless 26-year-old from the English countryside, takes a job at the local castle as a caregiver and companion to a wealthy young banker, Will Traynor. Wheelchair-bound from an accident two years prior, the once adventurous Will has all but given up — that is until Lou determines to show him that life is worth living.
What people think about Me Before You
What makes Me Before You linger is the way it turns a familiar romantic setup into something warmer, sharper, and quietly disarming—less about grand gestures than the small, brave choices that make life feel livable. Emilia Clarke brings a radiant, lived-in charm to Lou, while Sam Claflin gives Will a guarded intensity that makes their push-and-pull chemistry feel earned, not manufactured. Thea Sharrock directs with a light touch, letting the film glide between witty banter and tear-prick sincerity without tipping into melodrama, all while asking reflective questions about dignity, love, and what “enough” really means. It won’t be for everyone—especially if you’re wary of emotionally heavy romances—but if you’re open to a story that’s both tender and thought-provoking, it’s a deeply affecting watch.
Me Before You is aiming for a glossy, tear-jerking romance about two people from different worlds changing each other’s lives, and on that surface level it mostly delivers. The problem is it handles its big, sensitive themes with a blunt, sometimes superficial touch, leaning on familiar beats and stereotypes that can feel manipulative rather than earned. If you’re hoping for a nuanced, thoughtful drama about disability and end-of-life choices, this may come off as clumsy and predictably sentimental. But if you’re in the mood for an easy, conventionally crowd-pleasing romance with likable leads (Emilia Clarke’s charm does a lot of heavy lifting), you might still find it watchable—just don’t expect subtlety.
