Star Trek Beyond (2016)
The USS Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.
What people think about Star Trek Beyond
Star Trek Beyond feels like a bright, full-throttle reminder of why this franchise endures: not just for the phasers and spectacle, but for the warm, bickering camaraderie of a crew that genuinely needs one another to survive. Justin Lin stages the action with clean, propulsive energy, yet he never loses the human (and Vulcan) heart of the Enterprise—especially in the funny, surprisingly tender interplay between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. The vibe is classic Trek adventure with a modern blockbuster pulse, packed with uncharted-space wonder, clever problem-solving, and a welcome streak of humor that keeps the peril from turning grim. If you want a brooding, philosophical sci-fi think piece, this isn’t that, but if you’re craving an entertaining, nostalgic ride that honors teamwork and exploration, it’s an easy ticket to board.
Star Trek Beyond is clearly trying to be a crowd-pleasing “back to basics” Trek adventure: the crew gets separated, teamwork saves the day, and the Federation’s ideals get a simple stress test. Justin Lin delivers slick, fast action and a likable new addition in Jaylah, plus the Pine–Quinto–Urban trio still has enough charm to carry the quieter character beats. The downside is that it often feels like competent franchise maintenance rather than a bold chapter—familiar plot turns, a villain who’s serviceable more than memorable, and set pieces that can blur together once the initial spectacle wears off. If you want big, straightforward sci-fi fun with the Enterprise crew and don’t need the story to take risks, you’ll have a good time; if you’re hoping for something genuinely new or thematically sharper, this one may feel a bit safe.
