Afire (2023)

Afire is special because it turns a seemingly simple summer getaway into a razor-sharp, quietly thrilling study of ego, desire, and denial, all while a literal catastrophe smolders at the edge of the frame. Christian Petzold directs with such clean precision that the film can make you laugh at the petty frictions of shared living, then tighten your chest with the sense that something irrevocable is approaching—without ever resorting to melodrama. Thomas Schubert is wonderfully prickly as the self-important writer at the center, and Paula Beer brings a disarming warmth and intelligence that keeps the movie’s romantic spark feeling adult rather than cute. If you like character-driven dramas that glide between wry comedy and emotional reckoning, it’s bracingly satisfying; if you need big plot beats or constant likability, its cool, observant tone may feel intentionally unsettling.

Afire is clearly aiming for a sly, sun-dazed chamber piece about creative ego, desire, and the way a looming disaster can expose who people really are, and Petzold stages it with crisp craft and a strong, quietly magnetic turn from Paula Beer. The problem is the film asks you to spend a lot of time trapped with Leon’s prickly self-absorption, and if you don’t find that kind of intentionally unpleasant protagonist interesting, it can feel like homework rather than tension. The tonal pivot from dry, awkward comedy to something far darker is bold, but it may register as abrupt or emotionally remote, especially with the deliberately literary, self-aware framing. If you like slow-burn European dramas that reward patience and subtext, it’s worth your time; if you want romance, warmth, or a clean blend of comedy and tragedy, this may leave you cold.
