Roskam shoots desire and danger on the same tightrope, letting the heist elements crackle in the background while Matthias Schoenaerts and Adèle Exarchopoulos make the love story feel immediate, messy, and painfully human. The vibe is gritty and sensual rather than glossy—more bruised-knuckle realism than escapist fantasy—and when it leans into emotion, it earns it through performance, not manipulation.
