Jojo Rabbit (2019)

Jojo Rabbit is special because it dares to puncture the inflated mythology of Nazism with absurd, disarming humor, then quietly turns that laughter into something braver: empathy. Taika Waititi sets a storybook-bright, off-kilter tone where a child’s imagination collides with the real world, and the film’s satire lands not as a gimmick but as a scalpel—sharp, purposeful, and unexpectedly tender. Roman Griffin Davis anchors it with a performance that’s funny and painfully sincere, while Scarlett Johansson and Thomasin McKenzie bring warmth and steel that keep the movie grounded when the subject matter turns heavy. It isn’t for everyone—some viewers won’t like comedy anywhere near this era—but if you can accept the tonal tightrope, it’s a humane, memorable film about unlearning hate and choosing decency.

Jojo Rabbit is trying to use satire and a child’s-eye perspective to show how propaganda warps empathy, then slowly steer you toward something more humane and heartbreaking. When it works, the performances (especially the kids and Scarlett Johansson) give the story real warmth and a few genuinely sharp laughs. But be warned: the film’s whimsy, “cute” stylization, and emotional button-pushing can feel glib next to the subject matter, and some moments play more like a fable than a hard look at Nazism. If you want a sober WWII drama or satire with teeth that never softens the horror, this may irritate you; if you can accept tonal whiplash for a heartfelt, accessible anti-hate message, it’ll likely land.
