Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018)

Pacific Rim: Uprising is the kind of movie that remembers why we came to this world in the first place: the sheer, childlike awe of skyscraper-sized robots throwing down with nightmare monsters, staged with bright, brisk confidence and a pop-fueled sense of fun. It moves like a blockbuster with someplace to be, and John Boyega brings a likable swagger and heart to the cockpit, while Cailee Spaeny gives the film an underdog spark that makes the next generation of pilots easy to root for. The vibe is slick, loud, and enthusiastic—more Saturday-night crowd-pleaser than solemn sci-fi—packed with clean visual storytelling, big set pieces, and just enough camaraderie to keep the metal-and-mayhem grounded. If you’re looking for the darker, moodier atmosphere of the first film, this one leans lighter and faster, but if what you want is pure robots-vs.-kaiju thrills delivered with charm, it absolutely shows up.

Pacific Rim: Uprising is clearly aiming to be a louder, sleeker “next generation” sequel, swapping the original’s mythic weight for a more youthful, training-academy energy and a faster, quippier pace. The problem is it often feels like a perfectly serviceable blockbuster assembled from familiar parts: the plot is on rails, the character beats are thin, and the action—while frequent—can come off more functional than jaw-dropping. If you loved the first film for its sense of scale, atmosphere, and weird imagination, this one may feel like a glossy imitation rather than a true escalation. Still, John Boyega brings likable charisma and there are a few fun robot-vs-monster moments, so it can work as a turn-your-brain-off watch—just don’t expect it to recapture the original’s spark.
