Phantom (2023)

Phantom is the kind of slick, high-wire thriller that makes you lean forward without realizing it, turning a single day in a cliffside hotel into a pressure cooker of secrets, suspicion, and survival under Japanese-occupied Korea. Director Lee Hae-young stages the intrigue with a classy, old-school spy-movie polish—gorgeous cinematography, razor-sharp blocking, and bursts of kinetic action that feel earned rather than noisy. Sul Kyung-gu brings gravitas, Lee Hanee crackles with presence, and Park So-dam adds a cool, watchful edge, making every glance and half-truth feel like it matters. It’s not a quiet historical drama and it doesn’t shy away from moderate violence and intensity, but if you want a stylish Korean crime thriller that plays like a cat-and-mouse game with real bite, this is a deeply satisfying ride.

Phantom is clearly aiming for a tense, stylish WWII-era spy whodunit—five suspects, one day, and a pressure-cooker hotel setting under Japanese occupation. When it leans into atmosphere, performances (especially the leads), and sleek cinematography, it can look and sound like a prestige thriller. The problem is the storytelling: the mystery feels thin and oddly explained, and the second half can veer into cartoonish, “just go with it” plotting that may leave you feeling the film is wasting your attention. If you like tight, logical thrillers with clean payoffs, this may frustrate you; if you’re happy to trade coherence for mood, set pieces, and committed acting, you’ll find enough to enjoy.
