Derek Cianfrance turns a remote lighthouse into a whole emotional universe, shot with windswept, painterly beauty and steeped in a period atmosphere you can practically feel in your bones. Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander make the marriage at its center feel lived-in and fragile, while Rachel Weisz brings a quiet force that deepens the film’s moral weight without ever tipping into melodrama. It’s unabashedly tear-leaning and patient, so it may not be for viewers who want a brisk pace, but if you’re in the mood for something heartfelt and gorgeously crafted, it’s hard to shake.

The Light Between Oceans is clearly aiming for a sweeping, old-fashioned moral tragedy about love, grief, and the consequences of one impossible choice, and it’s hard to fault the ambition.
