John Carney fills Dublin with that lived-in warmth he does so well, letting songs and small moments carry the emotional weight, while Eve Hewson gives Flora a bracing, magnetic humanity you can’t help but root for. Joseph Gordon-Levitt adds an easy, gently comic rapport as an online teacher whose encouragement feels earned, not sentimental, and the film’s humor keeps the tenderness from turning syrupy. It’s not for anyone who wants high drama or a traditional romance arc, and the R-rated language is frequent, but if you’re on the fence and crave a crowd-pleasing, big-hearted story that earns its uplift, this one lands like a favorite tune you didn’t know you needed.

Flora and Son is clearly aiming for that John Carney sweet spot: an underdog Dublin story where music becomes the bridge between a frazzled parent and a difficult kid, with a bit of charm and heart along the way. The problem is it often feels like it’s reaching for too many emotional notes at once—subplots pop in and out, the pacing wanders, and some character threads never land with the punch the setup promises. If you need the songs to be genuinely memorable or the drama to feel tightly written, this may come off as lightweight and a little messy rather than moving.
