Wonder (2017)

Wonder has a rare gift: it invites you to look at a child the world has trained itself to stare at, and then gently teaches you how to truly see him. Stephen Chbosky directs with an unshowy compassion that lets the emotion arrive honestly, carried by Jacob Tremblay’s openhearted performance and grounded by Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson as parents who feel real, funny, and worn-in by love. The film’s vibe is warm and clarifying—yes, it faces bullying and cruelty, but it’s ultimately about the everyday heroism of kindness, the way a community can change one small choice at a time. If you’re allergic to sentimental stories, a few moments may feel designed to tug at you, but it earns its tears the old-fashioned way: with character, patience, and a big, decent heart.

Wonder is aiming to be a big-hearted, accessible family drama about kindness in the face of bullying, and it largely succeeds at delivering that warm, “do the right thing” message. The catch is that it plays like a carefully engineered tearjerker: the conflicts are simplified, the emotional beats are telegraphed early, and it can feel more like a lesson plan than a lived-in story. If you’re allergic to sentimentality, or you want a sharper, more nuanced look at disability and school cruelty, this may come off as obvious and a bit too tidy. Still, Jacob Tremblay is genuinely affecting, the film is easy to watch with kids, and when it focuses on small moments of empathy, it earns some of its sweetness.
