Blockers (2018)

Blockers takes the well-worn prom-night sex-comedy setup and flips it into something sharper, warmer, and funnier than it has any right to be, because the real punchline is how lovingly it skewers parental panic. Kay Cannon directs with a brisk, confident touch, letting the movie go big and outrageous while still finding genuine affection in the mess, and the script keeps surprising you with moments that are smarter and more emotionally honest than the premise suggests. Leslie Mann brings frazzled sincerity, Ike Barinholtz weaponizes anxiety into comedy, and John Cena—used brilliantly—turns sweetness and sincerity into the kind of laugh that sneaks up on you. It is proudly, loudly R-rated and not shy about crude humor or explicit situations, but if you can meet it on that wavelength, you’ll find a surprisingly enlightened, big-hearted crowd-pleaser hiding inside the chaos.

Blockers is clearly trying to be a modern, sex-positive spin on the “parents panic while teens grow up” comedy, and it occasionally lands a sweet, surprisingly sincere note about letting go. The problem is it leans hard on loud, gross-out set pieces and predictable misunderstandings, so if raunchy R-rated humor and secondhand embarrassment aren’t your thing, you’ll feel trapped in prom-night chaos. The pacing is uneven, bouncing between heartfelt speeches and cartoonish antics in a way that can make the emotion feel a bit pre-packaged. Still, the cast commits—John Cena in particular is game—and if you want a shameless, high-energy crowd comedy with a softer message underneath, it can do the job.
