Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015)

Hotel Transylvania 2 is that rare sequel that doesn’t just repeat the joke—it deepens it, turning its monster-mash premise into a warm, high-energy comedy about family, change, and the anxieties we inherit from the people who love us most. Genndy Tartakovsky’s animation has a rubbery, Looney Tunes snap to it, staging gags with such momentum you can feel the movie grinning as it sprints from one invention to the next. Adam Sandler’s Dracula is surprisingly endearing here, and the whole voice cast clicks into a brighter, more confident rhythm that makes the hotel feel like a lived-in playground. If you’re not into broad cartoon chaos, it may be a bit much—but if you want a light, funny crowd-pleaser with a sweet heart under the gothic frosting, this one delivers.

Hotel Transylvania 2 is clearly trying to be a hyperactive, kid-friendly riff on family growing pains, using monsters as a cute metaphor for parenting anxiety and generational culture clash. The problem is the story feels thin and predictable, mostly stitched together to deliver loud gags, frantic set pieces, and a lot of “will he/won’t he” worry that can start to feel smothering rather than heartfelt. If you’re an adult hoping for the sharper wit and inventive momentum Genndy Tartakovsky can bring, this one may play more like a noisy babysitter than a genuinely clever comedy. That said, the animation has energy, the monster side characters still get a few fun moments, and younger kids who just want bright chaos and slapstick will likely have a better time than you.
